I had a couple customers stop in at Home Depot a couple weeks ago wanting to buy electric leaf blowers. One lady bought the EGO $250 blower unit as a local landscaper had given her an estimate around that.

So she comes back the next day returning it, she said it lasted about 25 minutes in "turbo". She was happy with the power but not the trouble charging it up again.

Are any of these units worth homeowners buying them that will be a good investment? Mowers, saws, blowers, etc.?

AvE had that blower for 13 months then the battery died. $200 for the battery he said.

I'm thinking of trying a Makita string trimmer since I already have the batteries.

I thinking anything that's gonna take a constant load is gonna be a no go for me.

Your thread title asks about 'professional' battery powered equipment. Your last line asks about 'homeowner' use. The short answer is 'Yes' to both.

Several threads here and on other forums about specific brands of battery OPE. Companies like STIHL and Husqvarna have different lines for pro and homeowner use. There is a price difference.

Most companies that sell cordless tools, including DeWalt, Makita, Milwaukee, Bosch, etc. also sell battery powered outdoor power equipment. Several companies such as Oregon, Redback, Greenworks, EGO, ECHO, etc. sell only OPE. Then there are store brands, and low end products to sell at a price point.

I have 40V and 120V models. They keep getting better.

EGO has had many good reviews posted. The problem is the blower. Any blower. They drain batteries very quickly.

With my battery powered hedge trimmers, I can trim a 50 foot long hedge, and still have three out of four LEDs lit on the battery pack. If my grass is not too long I can mow my entire lot (50' X 150') with a single battery. Battery powered leaf blower - maybe 10 minutes tops of continuous use.

As noted, for professional use, STIHL and Husqvarna sell extended capacity backpack batteries. For a average user, I always recommend having at least one spare battery to swap out, while the other is on the charger. Better to have more. If you always buy compatible equipment, the batteries can be shared among different tools.

I wouldn't consider it 'pro' equipment, but I have a Milwaukee M18 leaf blower. With 1 5ah and 2 2ah batteries, I'm right on the edge of being to clear my driveway (approx. 5300 sq. ft.). I borrowed a 9ah battery from work and almost finished it before it died. If there's much moisture on the ground, fuhgeddaboudit. But outside of a gas or corded blower it made the most sense, as I have a bunch of other M18 tools. But I apparently a need for more battery packs.

A couple the lawn guys I know are looking at the Stihl system. Some of the up scale neighborhoods have started to ban the use of small gas engines. I guess you can still use gas mowers but blowers and trimmers are not allowed. All the tree huggers live there I guess. I have heard crazy rumors about Commiefonia banning all gas powered lawn equipment. Got a "green" friend who has an electric car. He didn't believe me when i told him it was powered by fuel oil. He doesn't eat meat because cattle pollute. He didn't believe me when I told him diesel fuel feeds the entire country.

And Blythe Masters is behind the Blockchain currency: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blythe_Masters Why isn't she in jail since she was the brains behind the JPMorgan credit default swaps that largely precipitated the 2008 economic crisis?

With the solar and battery based technologies you also have huge environmental negatives in China and other countries.

I think tomorrow I will drive my Prius to Starbucks. With a smug holy than thou look. Then over to the organic food store with my unbleached canvas bags for some naturally sustainable health food. After that over to donate to a climate change fund. Then back to Starbucks for a double Jamoca latte and pat myself on the back for being a good global citizen.:meparto:

Don't forget to start a charity and then guilt trip everyone in to donating so you don't have too.

Aside from all that stuff, the better battery powered chainsaws are very convenient and effective.

Gluten free granola aside.

I'm thinking a little Makita will be handy feeding my little smoker.

Be sure also to not use any leather, wool, silk, animal based products as they are cruel. And avoid animal based food products as they are "stolen" foods, whether eggs, milk or God help us meat. Cruelty free is the wave of the future with central planning telling everyone how to live.

Personally I don't think "more power" is the solution, we are better off walking more, driving less, using rakes and hand tools more and power equipment less.

Both those things don't keep the economy churning like what sales wants.

I’m thinking the title should read “Canola Oil Ran Tools”.

I think for home owner or lawn service types the quick use tools in battery powered make a ton of sense right now. I was helping clean up at the church the other weekend and there were half a dozen "low hanging" (12-15' really who cares) branches that someone decided needed to go. Before anyone could begin pull starting their pole pruners the dude with the Craftsman/Ryobi/Sears or something pole pruner was halfway done. No fuel issues, no filters easy start. It makes a ton of sense on tools that won't be used for more than 30 minutes at a time especially if you have a couple of them that can all use the same battery. I think lawn services in town could make great use of them. Gas powered mowers and everything else battery with a couple of battery's and charger on the trailer.
