I fixed a bunch of 394/5 cases, one in particular was pretty badly damaged but turned out really well so I thought I would share it.

A large chunk of the case is broke off including the upper starter asm mount, carb shelf and rear left AV mount.

Yes, it was a 394 case.

It would probably around $75 to weld the case back together and make it all pretty again but this was for a friends saw that I'm building him so it was no extra charge. I've been told that I don't charge enough.

Try bringing him donuts and/or beer next time. He’ll weld it.

Actually, I took him a couple crabs last time. He's not a drinker and doesn't have a sweet tooth - but most people here on the coast like crab.

In fact some of the local businesses will barter in crab and rockfish.

There are really only two rod alloys readily available. AZ92A and AZ61A, on dirty old cases I can’t really tell the difference.

You set the tig welder on AC with setting similar to welding aluminum. Cleaning and prep is everything.

+1

might add that "cleaning" w/fiber grinder wheels leaves chit embedded in base metal, contaminating weld.
carbide burrs/die grinder is cleaner. or wire brush...

my rate is $50./hr., btw.
