I only leave the decomp intact if it was an MS390 and has the cutout in the top cover. Otherwise I plug them. I do use them on saws so equipped since it's easier on the starter.

Plug that decomp, not really needed and it’s a source of a possible leak.

If the de-comp is leaking, that is a DIFFERENT problem. You fix that problem with a bit of fine valve lapping compound. - Then the de-comp doesn't leak and it works quite well.

My saw does NOT require a 'starting drill' to get it started. I have a 066 coil on it with a 4 degree retard on starting and with a properly operating de-comp it is a simple 'pull and go'. No fuss, no worry, just pull it and go. - A little girl could start it.

With the time and $ spent working on these things one could build a decent 372/440... and a 026 or 346 type saw is a better small firewood saw than a farmboss. I wouldn’t mess with a farmboss that far gone, would just use it for parts support. I wouldn’t trust those am parts on it either. Just imho.

I agree but it's not my saw nor my money. I dont mind working on it so it's not a big deal.

Hopefully the cylinder cleans up. Have had good luck with meteor or hyway pistons.

Good info, I have a buddy that has a 290 getting a little tired and was talking to him this weekend about just this swap. I get that the clamshell saws are low grade but how do you argue with a guy that's cut 14 cord a year for six years with one and it never skipped a beat?

You pop a 039 topend on it and watch the ear to ear grin on your buddies face!

I bought the $50 POS to help someone else, then got stuck with it. It went from a 'loaner' saw project and got out of hand. It's a nice saw now, in fact it is my go-to saw as it sits perfectly between the 50 and 77cc saws.

However, I would have much preferred to have spent that much R&D on a Dolmar 6100 than an old 029.

Now that people know what needs to be done with them, they can fix one up in a weekend with cheap AM parts. If you find one in a junk pile someplace, grab it as there will be somebody that will want to build it. - It won't be me though, been there, done that.

I have one advertised on Atlanta CL right now for $360. I've sold plenty of them for that price and I won't sell it for less. (new Stihl bar) It may stay on there for a month or two but I don't care, I'll move onto the next one. I typically use them quite a bit before I sell them to make sure nothing's going to bugger on them.

That’s about all there good for, selling on craigslist. Amazing what people will pay for a name. If it’s a stihl farmboss or husky rancher it must be what the pros use. Lol

Everyone has their own opinions on what's good and what's bad. Sometimes those opinions are formed by personal experience and sometimes by hearsay or advertising influence. I have personally owned and used nearly every brand of saw and I have my favorites and certainly a brand preference but allow for others that have their own opinions. Any saw that reliably starts and runs can cut wood and I could do what I do with any brand.
