I found a old plow point in the Y of a round I ran thru the splitter a few years back. Found several rocks in Y's also.
The best was a round Steel fence post about 6 feet long, when cutting fire wood from a pile left from clearing. a fence line. I also got a butt end of a huge Oak tree that inside about a foot was the lag bolt pin set up a gate swings on. Lots of barb an dwoven wire too.

Some examples.

Al, this never ceases to amaze me. I once avoided seven embedded climbing spikes in a tree trunk. Somehow my buck cuts were spaced at the right distance apart to miss them all. The steel spikes all showed up when I tried to split the rounds a week later. Gasp!

Tjhere are screw in tree steps in a oak tree of property we just bought. I can see them but they are ingrown to far to remove with out killing the tree.
So I am going to cut it down and cut between the steps then split them out.

It's actually like tight rope walking. A metal detector might help. I was just plain lucky. The local saw mill has lost dozens of blades with these things, and it costs them over $100 apiece to sharpen and save them.

I got a load of culls from the local saw mill last year. All of the logs were rejected because of metal. I've blocked up about half and have been able to avoid metal so far. It'll be interesting to see what's there, when I split the rounds

Sometimes if the sawmill thinks that the logs came from a residential tree, they will reject it. They can't take the chance because of the cost of repairing the big blade or the down time of replacing it. Many times they think wrong, but that is the way it is.

Much better than a chunk of steel like a lag bolt.

As I once found in a 60" Water Oak tree a railroad spike. Sorry no pictures. It was strange through as I cut all the way through the spike before the chain stop cutting. Needless to say a new chain was needed. Usually with oaks there is staining if steel or iron is present.

Hopefully you took care of them for a whhile until they awere able take care themselves. I cut several trees over the years where that either late or early groups of squirrels. Always been Grey Squirrels but those the picture here are what we call around here as Fox Squirrels. They are considerable larger but not plentiful as the Greys. About one Fox to two Greys as a meal.

They were mighty scared. I tried to shoo them out but they had nothing of it. I was going golfing in an hour. I took the pics, then took a shower and 1 of the 3 took off but the other 2 were still inside. When I got home all were gone apparently no worse for the experience.

My logger buddy told me a horror story last Sunday. He was cutting a big cottonwood log for the sawmill when he looked down and saw blood splattering out. Apparently he had run into a raccoon nest that was built in the hollow section of the tree. He's hit them before and it's not a pretty sight.

Bullets are nothing … and Steel is not the worst thing either … had a little trouble with this Black Oak log:

Another round had a broken nail in it, also black stained, but luckily my saw did not hit it. But this insulator caused enough chain damage!
