Question for the foresters,

Anyone know how much (roughly) I could expect to pay a forester to provide me with a harvest plan & markings for 20 acres? Do foresters grade trees for selling? Sorry if that last question is stupid, but I’ve never hired a forester so I don’t know what services accompany them. Thanks

Josh

Here in the Midwest it varies! Some foresters are tied in with land grant universities and they do it for free. Others are private and usually get a percent of the sales! You can have them give you type of species, board feet amount of harvestable timber and also mark unwanted trees for improved timber stand. Pm me if you want more info! Good luck!

I’m sure there is LOTS of variation, was a little hesitant to even ask the question because of it. A local State University has a reputable Forestry program, I think I’ll start there. Thanks for the college idea!

Just got back from the local mill. Since I’m selling my logs to them, their forester is coming out on Monday morning to walk my land with me and mark trees that should be harvested. All for the price of NADA. Pretty surprised by that, but I’m not expecting any thing other than the walk and some learning conversations while he’s here.

Josh, have you considered asking the county soil and water forester if he can do that for you? It wont cost you a thing and they can even help you with a management plan for your lott.

I did this sort of work for a while. I did it by acreage here. I had no interest in buying the timber myself. Basically you are better off with someone that doesn’t have an interest in the timber. A forester for a buyer will under estimate for their benefit.

We have a "county Forester" in these parts. I think he's actually employed by the USDA or DNR, and serves several counties, but if there's someone like that over there, they'd be worth a call.

I had him visit my property and we went for a walk and discussed what I wanted to get out of it. I didn't have any saw logs or quality hardwoods so it was a short visit but he is there to provide free service to the tax payers/property owners. Since you wood lot sounds mature and big enough he could probably help you out. Mine was from Oswego County Soil and Water. Check with your local county soil and water.

Well it doesn’t appear that we have a forester in Oneida county. He retired 3 years ago and all we have is a contract with a private company for management of county owned reforestation projects. Still going to make some calls today but it’s doesnt look very promising.

I know it isn't super close but you could call someone at Quality Hardwoods in Sidney and see if they could give you some leads.
Thanks but I had the forester from a local mill walk through my property with me. Really nice guy, gladly answered all the rookie questions I asked. About half way through he said everything I’ve been doing the last 5 years and trees I was pointing out for harvest were in line with my goals for my land. Good to know. I’ve started logging, got some good saw logs out. Slow going being the feller and skidder driver, I’ve only gotten 20 out so far, but I enjoy it so I’m not complaining. Every time I use the winch I can’t help but smile, works better than expected.

Biggest thing is I’m having to relearn how to fell trees. Big difference between just dropping them for firewood and dropping them to send to the mill for $$.

What kind of face cut do you use Mason? I’ve been using a humbolt with decent success but have had a couple with bad fiber pull because I didn’t have it open enough. Still learning
Lot of normal 70-90 degrees facecuts I would say. Humbolt wastes a lot of wood in our east coast situation imo (high stump), but in the right situation it works well. We bore cut pretty much everything. Still learning, the hardest part for me was learning lining up back cuts. I learned that if you have a crooked face cut... it screws up your back cut. Everything has to line up. Still learning!

Need a hand? I'd be happy to come down and spend a few hours playing. Either sawing or skidding. Let me know.
