Hope you two don't mind me being nosy .......Just interested if you boys are dealing with snow over there in NY ? I think you Joe end up on the plough if its bad so figure this may be partly whats keeping life busy.
Yup Joes schedule has a lot to do with it but that’s not the only factor. Sorry to leave y’all hanging but it’s going to be a while before we get this one done.

The 346 whooping already happened. Pitting 254 against 357 this time. I’ve got some ground to make up.
Yes you have, I have faith in you when you're facing his 357 also.
1) Advanced timing
2) remove most of what inside that 254 muffler.
3) bigger carb + airfilter holder modd

I'm currious to know how close you are his 357 after those simple modds, its more like putting your 254 on equal terms ;)
Is his 357 ported?

I'm always confussed who is Joe who is Josh, you are Josh, right?

I’ve completed all of those mods so far Tor, and they put me trailing the 357 by a second, only thing I have left is to do some grinding.

Yup his 357 is ported. And runs very strong.

Sounds like you need to get the burrs out!
I definitely will be. Won’t be changing much though, my 254 cylinder times great the way it is bone stock. About the only improvement I can make is some widening, more intake duration and smoothing out the lowers. Other than that, the timing will remain unchanged.

I did get a 199 carb on it a couple weeks ago, picked up some power in the cut. Hoping some additional intake duration will help the carb reach its potential.

My 357 is built very similarly to joes and I’ve done some testing. The 254 is about a second behind in 10” wood and in full bar cuts using the same 20”, 3/8 bar and chain on both saws.
Our 357’s are very strong, not sure if I can catch them but we’ll see.

I think the 254 can be made stronger than the 357, but it will take a higher level of mods to do it. The once he same is done to the 357 it's back to the drawing board again. Kinda goes to show that generally speaking, whichever is stronger in stock form will always be stronger step for step when mods come into play. Like the 254 v 346, despite some advancements in design the 346 has, the 254 is simply the stronger saw from the get-go.

Thank you, unfortunately I only have the 562 left. Well not unfortunately because I love that saw.
So you got rid of the 346NE, the 254, and the 262 because you like the 562xp more for most of your needs, or because you have other smaller saws than the 562xp?
