So I found this on evilbay and just had to have one.
Professional Gas chainsaw 72cc electric chain saw petrol saw with 18" bar https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/192377847430

Looked like it would be a MS440 or 038.
After nine days it arrived.

Inside the wrapping was a box. And, inside that was another box.

Ta Dah! An 038 copy.

Nice touch huh?

We gave it a very careful examination.

It had issues with the bar adjuster and the oil cap from the get go.

#5 was missing.

We got a 20” bar instead of the 18 mentioned in the listing.
Looks legit but.

The arrogant Germans don’t put grease holes in their bar tips.

We replaced the decomp valve with a genuine Stihl because of bad experience with the Chinese crap. Near ruined two top ends with ‘em.[emoji90]

The “high quality chain” came in a fake box.

We looked over the chain cutter by cutter and link by link.

We found one cutter that had never touched a grinder and one looks exactly like a low profile cutter.[emoji849]

This morning we gave it a go. Started on the second dribble of fuel and ran, idled normal. We did not touch the carb.[emoji15]

Replaced the AF and cover and cut a couple big cookies.

Impressive. [emoji106] Needs a 24”.

Chain stretched some.

No oil to the bar mount yet. [emoji848] We may have to bleed the air out or prime the lines.

More later as the weather has turned to chit.[emoji37]

We keep Chips Ahoy on hand in the giant party pack size.

Sniffing the fuel tank and examining the spark plug leads me to believe it had been run checked prior to shipment.

The bucking spike (small) was mounted upside down. Weird.

Got an oil cap from my dealer ($3.80, down from $9.60) [emoji106]and de burred the oil tank opening with a Swiss pattern file to get it to work properly.

No oil or fuel leaks. [emoji322]

Run him without the chain tomorrow [emoji1696] and watch for a sign of life from the pump.

I honestly can’t believe eBay let’s them sell fake stihl branded items, and I am surprised stihl hasn’t try to stop them! It’s the branded items on eBay that are fake with no repositions, not sure where this is breaking down? I bought fake keihen motorcycle carbs, they are great copies and work well, but I just don’t understand how they are getting away with it, the box looks legit an even has made in Japan papers in the box, have purchased authentic carbs and you can tell these aren’t, knew it because of the price, and after seeing them there are minor differences, just surprised they are aloud!

So, “MS381” is a Australia and New Zealand thing?

Explains the questioning I got at Jack Horners Machinery Thursday.

Sensing confusion I backpedaled and told Tyler MS380.

Now we have a excuse to remove the starter. [emoji6]

I like how they copy everything to the nth degree – yet they force the end user to attach the items branded "Stihl" as if that gets them off the hook!

I'm anxious to see how it all works out. Doesn't look bad for 300 clams delivered!

Question: Does the carb have limiter caps? :goofy:

How is that badge attached to the cover? Most times that stuff just snaps on, a bit of good adhesive ensures it stays in place. Think I will just keep my OEM 038 Magnum , not trade it in on one of these.

Four pegs melted over on the back side.

In your case, just get a Farmertec 380 kit and use it as originally intended, spare parts. [emoji108]

LOL, ...I have 5 to pull any parts from, that`s been my method of running saws for life, gather up any and all parts saws that come my way. For my personal saws about all I need to buy new is sparkplugs, bought by the case, carb kits bought by the dozen and fuel lines and filters bought a dozen at a time. The rest can be picked off my mostly free parts saws, most I have ever spent was $45. for my best 038 Magnum that actually had a brand new OEM piston and cylinder installed on it, total for all 6 of them is well under $150.

We got proof of life from the oil pump. [emoji106]

I left the seller positive feedback with mention of the wonky oil fill port and cap.

But no cookies today.

Interesting, they have gotten so good at cloning stuff. Now if they can get the quality on a couple of the parts up they will be doing fantastic. One of them is the soft parts like the lines and boots. Couldn't get my clone ms361 to run today. I suspect another carb boot air leak again. Still torn on running one of these saws in a reliability standpoint, but for a occasional user it's an amazing deal.

Bar adjuster is still causing me trouble. [emoji37]

Attempt to measure piston crown clearance with .062” solder failed. Too thick to ‘smush’ with the starter. A .019” wire as a feeler gauge clears. Maybe some trimmer line would work but that would have some spring back. [emoji848]

Presquish the solder.

How long was the shipping? Huztl had these on sale a could weeks ago for like 260 but without a bar and likely 3 week shipping.
