You can definitely run the top ring only.

@blsnelling used to do on purpose in his ported saws with no ill effect.

I've done it on some saws, like the stihl 361, to get a wider exhaust port. It doesn't do anything bad at all to a Saw.

That’s good news. A 4 gr. difference shouldn’t matter since am to oem had a 3 gram difference. Now I just have to figure the rest out. This is fun!

I took 2mm off the base and another 1.5mm off the bottom of the piston and it put my numbers at 97 118 76. and I got the piston lighten to 4 grams heavier then the 024 piston with only the top ring. While lowering the cyl 2mm I had to do a little more grinding to clear the flywheel but not as much as I expected. Hopefully monday the aluminum for the head and my long studs show up then I can really get moving on this. I am getting excited to hear this thing run (if it runs).

I got the head materials and the hardware today now I just have to ruin some aluminum. Also I got a 029 intake mocked in there and after I drilled the 024 intake hole out to an inch it fits like it was made for it. I also threw in some pics of the basecut and piston lightening work from this weekend. I picked up cheap lathe this weekend ( a HF 7 x 10 mini lathe with tooling) and it looks brand new. I will probably sell it, but it came with some nice boring bars and a really sweet inside radius turner which I will post pics when I finally get it home. Forgot to load it up at my folks last night before we came home. I don't need the lathe home but the inside radius turner would fit my southbend nicely and help me on the chamber for this head. Oh well I can get started on the head and finish it next weekend after I pick it up.

Very interesting build as many others have said! Looking forward to see a video of this Frankenstein in some wood!

Chamber looks big for saw.

Easy way to check is to put plug in, cover band with packing tape, inject water with 1cc syringe and needle and keep track.

@mdavlee , is ROT 1cc per 10cc for 200psi?

I will check it. I tried to make it a little smaller then the 034 Chamber. I can always take a little off of the bottom of the head and reshape the chamber. I am shooting from the hip on this project if you can't tell , haha hoping I end up with something that runs and learning a lot. I appreciate all the comments and suggestions.

That gets you close anyway. The plug takes up some plus the squish band area is added to the chamber size as well. On smaller heads a little ultra copper or even nothing will usually seal if torqued. The viton I had will melt and needs replaced every time you take the head off. If I were to do it again I’d use copper wire and make fire rings to sit in the groove.

I had a productive day today. I got the head machining done and cc'ed and it came out to 3.5cc plus the squish area which is .030" right now. Then I got the mounting hole done which required me to build a drilling attachment for the lathe, it was real handy. Then I did a mock-up assembly and modified the cover to fit over the big head and cut a hole for the plug and boot to stick through I also installed a stud in the head to use the original top cover hold down. I had to swap a longer plug wire on the 024 coil. I also mocked up the muffle and it should not take much massaging the get it to bolt on and seal.

Now I have to disassemble everything and clean it real good, install new gaskets and seals, modify the carb and linkage, finish the muffler, do some port work, and re-assemble. I also need to lap the head to the cylinder but I wanna get my compression to where I want it before that.

Very nicely done!

Any pics of the Drill fixture you made? I’d love to see it.

3.5 cc on a 50cc saw should give you healthy compression. Did you add some sealant for your comp check?

I didn’t add any sealant. I am gonna seal the base with a thin layer of motoseal and I am going to try and seal the head to the cylinder by lapping them and no sealant or o ring. I am going to get it running and check comp, then if it is too low I will take some material off the head.
