Stihl used those for a time in the early 034/044/064 saws - The thinking was that the shields would protect the bearings from debris.

It didn't end up working out that way.

Fines getting through or around the airfilter. Figured that is why my 044`s never had bearing problems, my new MS440 did, plastic bearing spacers disintegrated.

I wonder how these hybrids are for longevity? How they last with heavy usage. Or are they just a GTG saw. Occasional use saw.
I use mine a lot. I'd think they'd be fine as long as the cylinders are clearanced and bolt holes are moved correctly

Have yet to run a 044 that compares to a hybrid, my point is if going through all the work why not build the strongest saw possible? I suspect this will be Doc's strongest hybrid to date, due mostly to case volume. I get its a rare saw, but at the end of the day it's just a tool.

"He who holds the gold makes the rules"

So the guy with the open wallet chooses, and in this case, he chose this.

Not my place to tell him he is wrong. Its a cool build and will be unique.

Being a 12mm crank takes up more space in a marginally smaller crank case, I'm not sure where case volume will actually fall here.

Stihl makes one 044 case gasket, not a different one for 10 vs 12mm. How much could they really vary?

I know you can build a stronger saw, but they are rare, run great, and I believe they are one of the most efficient saws ever built. You can cut a heck of a lot of wood with one on a tank of fuel, and the tank is not that large.

Anyway, it is done.

Hey, if he doesn't want the crank P+C, maybe I can build it on a 12 mm case and see if the addl case capacity makes it run stronger!

I built one in 2004, used it for a while (two weeks or so) on a timber falling job, and then sold it to an AS member. He contacted me in 2016 to let me know the saw finally gave out -
he'd been getting 30-40 cords a year with it. He said it was the single greatest tool purchase he'd ever made.
