Anyone factory tech full time ?

Not sure exactly where to post this, it can be moved if needed mods. Does anyone here actually tech full time for a living ? I know we have some porters and some saw shop owners. There is an opening at my local Stihl dealer for a chainsaw/trimmer tech.

Local stihl shop tried to make me a offer four years ago. I was all ears but had to politely decline and then laughed my azz off when I got to the car. ($13.50hr 35hr a week no thank you)

Now if they do other equipment too? Well now then it would probably be a different story.

I see why you turned it down now. They wouldn't pay for the hour they give you for lunch each day.
Some shops are just to greedy.

A man has to have standards. Can't pull me out of the boat shop for that.


I wrapped boats and rvs for $15hr a few years back to help a friend out at another marina, but otherwise if I'm not desperate in need. My standards are a little bit higher. I charge $75hr for tech labor and $45 for non tech on side work.

Right now I'm broke, but that's my fault. Bought a newer ride for my wife and kids, plus doing all kind of stuff on the house. No way would $13.50hr pay for anything outside of essentials in this god forsaken state.

In Germany you will be payed 13 € per hour as a technician but some shops pay up to 15 €.
Labor cost for the car a about 110 €per hour at our Volkswagen dealer.
An those 15 €are before taxes so you end up at at 10-12 € per hour at 40 hours per week.

Is there a one hour minimum on work, or is it by the minute?

Honestly it's a good way to get a foot in the door, but it would be hard to make a decent living.

My friend recently changed jobs from working at a napa/stihl shop. To working for a large equipment rental company. The previous small engine experience helped him land the new job. He's making 2.5 times the money now and has every Saturday and Sunday off.

So like everyone else has done you have to start somewhere to get to the good. I wouldn't be opposed to working a few days a week on a job like that, but it would be hard to make a living on full time. Unless they are paying you better than they would around here.

I did it part time, while I was working for a logging company that owned a dealership. The pay was terrible, working conditions so-so, and some of the customers were terrible to deal with.

I made $12/hour at the shop, typically about 15-20/hours a week. Luckily I had a full-time job cutting which paid a lot more, otherwise I wouldn't have made it on the shop wages.

Another shop in that area currently pays $15/hr. starting plus a percentage on everything you fix. So if you're real productive, you can actually do ok.

That is f terrible pay for what you have to know. I’ve been a car , truck bus. Technician my whole life. The small engines is my hobby. I’ve had some local Stihl dealers ask me if I wanted to work for them on the side cause they couldn’t find or keep a good technician.

Full time stihl mechanic and have a family lol. Thats why i do logging and firewood on the side, just to make ends meet. Will be getting heavy into horse logging in the near future, but keeping my tech job too.
I should say that im becoming a biologger lol

Don’t the car dealership give you the tools. You just bring yourself?

Every company I ever work for (last 40 yrs) required me to have my own tools except for the very expensive factory required proprietary tools. Probably why I have two 44" set of tool boxes full of tools. Customer was just yesterday asking me how a set wrenches I would cost him as likedto have a set. Oh they just a measy $200 which is why I so guarded about them.

Ya'll would crap a brick if i told you my unfair wages, but when a guy is desperate for steady income and has very limited options for employment, you take what you can get.
I love working on saws.....except the ms441cm. I see one of those come in and i simply clock out and go home!
