Different (reset procedure) than what I had learned. On the older M Tronic, 1) Start position for 90 sec, shut down, 2) Run 90 sec at idle, shut down, 3) restart saw and put it in some big wood.

The problem is when the saw is run low on fuel for too long, it goes into rich mode (to protect from an air leak) and the saw will not start (normally) or idle, and you can not reset it yourself. Some dealers know how to do a reset after this happens. You can often start the saw if someone holds the throttle open while you pull the cord. The saw will not idle, but if you run about 6 tanks of fuel through it, it will eventually correct itself. It is a real PITA, but it works.
I don't think there is a "rich mode." The way I understand is the control module just monitors the rpm's and adjust accordingly. I could be wrong. It's happened before.

I'm not sure what they call it, but I have experienced it, and heard of others who have also. I know M Tronic is designed to protect a saw against air leaks, so I presume this is what is triggered when you run it too much low on fuel. The saw will not start, unless you put it on Run (not Start) and hold the trigger wide open. More annoyingly, the saw will not idle, you have to be active with the trigger for about 6 tanks to bring it back to life. It has actually happened to both my 362 and my 261, but when it happened to my 362 I did not figure out why it did it.

With the 261, I let a tree guy (climber) use the saw. He was loving it, but then it ran low on fuel. He kept insisting it still had fuel (not wanting to lower the saw) and tried starting it about 6 times, where it would just fire and then die. After that it was Hel*! Luckily, both saws are back to normal now, w/o any parts changed, and I like them. I just stay on top of them not running out of fuel.

It is a trade off I'm willing to accept for a saw that tunes itself for different temps, humidity and altitude. They are a pleasure to use.

I ve experienced the rich mode many hundreds times these months 661&261 both cause i m cutting like crazy all day long so ofcourse i forget fuel, after many days we don’t switch off just drop and refuel with saws on.

You are correct after some tanks, don’t ask me how many, the saw resets

Hey I went to get a spare air filter for the 462 here in Australia... these are the latest apparently.
Stihl Rep said that the only reason it's white now is that they had a lot of people not realising how dirty the black filters actually were and that resulted in starting issues with some saws. The white filters will make you want to clean them more often. ;)

Wow, six tanks of misery just to get a saw to idle again? No thanks. Mine would be tossed in a ditch, or sold off on CL, long before then.

It was worth it, the saw runs flawlessly now, I absolutely love it, and it will not be loaned out to that moron again!

The other side of the fence - I can bring this saw from my house (<500ft) to my upstate property (>2200 feet) and it runs flawlessly. Some of my standard carb saws will not do that!
