Hello,

I'm stumped and could use a little creativity or prior knowledge here. I am trying to install a new piston as shown in the attached photos. So far after messing with it and a pair of jewelers screwdrivers for about 45 minutes and chasing the clip around the garage floor a couple of times I am no closer to getting it installed. The only good news is that I still have both the new and old clips! I am beginning to learn why Stihl has a special tool for this... which I, unfortunately, don't have.

Tried some small sockets as pushers but the one that fits inside the pin bore allows the clip to ride up and over it while the next one up won't push the clip into the bore.

What am I missing?

Thanks,
Steve

I use a tuning screw driver with the small notch ground in the end of it
Is this just a regular small flat screwdriver or one of a multitude of tamper-proof variants? A photo would be helpful here.

Thanks,
Steve

Regular screwdriver, just grind a small “V” in the tip.
Oh, and try not to shove it through your thumb. It hurts when that happens

So what is the technique with the notched screwdriver? Press the center of the ring down into the removal gap in the piston and then work either end down into the grove alternately a little at a time?

I hate it when that happens! My thumb is still recovering from getting scissored in a double hung window when it decided to break loose. And that was a month ago!

The way I do it is, get one end of the clip in the recess just over or about halfway round opposite the cutout. and work my way round. And have a fingertip always on the clip. So if you slip it don’t go ping. The cutout helps in getting it in the recess

Much easier to show than type
Cheers

I made this contraption a few years ago after being frustrated trying to install the itty bitty clips for a Stihl 200T .It works pretty good------after thought --I use an ice pick to pluck out the clips and snatch them with a pair of needle nose pliers .Once they get loose they can fly a mile and you'll never see them again.

This is starting to look like the Stihl tool.

It really wasn't my idea .I kind of copied what they had at work to "hand pin" the rod and piston assembly on Ford engines that were normally done by machine . I think the auto engine are 20MM and the little Stihl 200T is only around 8 mm .Being so tiny I couldn't copy the sliding sleeve that held the clip .

It's allot on what you feel comfortable with , I'll start one side then work around , or a set of goofy needle nose...but I've got the still tool now ...no more struggle...I've heard some guys put a zip lock bag around it to contain stray piston clips ...

The bag is a great idea, never tried it.

These little saw circlips can be very trying. Motorcycle/ATV clips are a cakewalk in comparison.

I like to start with the closed side in and work them around. I'd really like to try the Stihl tool one of these days.
