Hey guys, I have a toro 826 with a Briggs. When it gets hot it lopes real hard unless I engage the choke. As it gets hotter I have to give more choke, until it doesn't well at all. When it does get hot it back fires and shoots flames out the exhaust. I'm going to order a carb or a carb kit, price dependent, and a coil, is there anything else I should be looking for?

Valves may need adjusting

Depends if you got a L-head or OHV valve but I suspect you have a L-head and it is more involved to adjust the valves. If a L-head then you will need a head gasket as you got to pull the valves in order to file the stems to increase the clearances. You also need to check the valve guides especially the exhaust on these L-heads as they tend wear a lot.

Sounds like it's lean, sometimes they have an adjustable jet on the bottom of the carb bowl.

I forgot the snowblower carbs usually have an adjustable jet/needle. You can really richen it up easily with that adjustment. It’s usually a knob on the bottom of the carb, almost looks like it could be a fuel drain

OK, I know exactly what you're talking about. I was thinking it was something leaking air in when it got hot because it'll run great for a while, and then lope. But I'll give it a little more fuel and see how that does, thanks guys.

Try fattening it up, I run my SB on the rich side. Gives me more speed, then grunt at the snowblower end at slower speed.

I fine tune the adjustment in when I get a nice pile of snow to bury them in. Keep max rpm under 3600-3700 (or what the manual says). They can throw the rod if you rev them too high or if the oil is too low. Those briggs are kind of rare, most snowblowers that age have the common tecumseh snow king.
