Man, I hate it when people drop off 6 or 8 chains that are so *frenched up ya gotta grind 1/8” off the damn thing just to find a corner...

I need a dust mask...
That's what I mean. A stroke or 2 off the rakers to tune the chain is no biggie. It's when they bring in semi that is still peened over, and the rakers were too high to begin with, that the grinder(s) are nice

It's just a tool to most. I'm sure there's guys on tool forums that won't pry with a screwdriver like we do, too

Grinding rakers is one thing where I've found a reversible grinder to be an advantage. Can leave the chain relatively loose in the guide and do every other raker, then reverse rotation to do the opposite side with no clamping and no chatter.

You’d hate having to tune them, they were meant for long loops that’s where they gained time with the HDG.

EBay special.
I grind round customer chains with it and switch to a 1/4" flat wheel tilted 10° for rakers

View attachment 149479

I use a 510 Oregon with the large 3/4 11h/BC wheel 60 degree head tilt then true the wheel to the vise always worked for as long I’ve been doing it the last 10+ years.

Especially for $90
At auction, unknown thing can go for less. many usefull (2 me) items have been $1. Last auction 2 boxes $1 ;2 unused paint brushes, blacksmith hammer head most of a box .44 mag fired same on 38 spl and a variety of other ingredients that was worth the cost of admission each.
My semi-skip chisel came in Wednesday. Ordered Monday; took longer for them to find & make sure of the right sku# than too be delivered!
& yes am on lookout for Silvey stuff. Not likely since there are no farm estate auctions listed yet this month. Usually a month or more ahead view

Because that’s where this stuff was made and we fall timber, I know a few guys out here that cut that would love to get a hold of something like that.

I know that I have referenced the raker height formula with numbers from an AS post from years ago, well, it comes out that their numbers were off a tad.

I ran the numbers cheating using a online formulas and came up with the easiest formula to set your rakers at whatever entry angle that you would like. The formula is for stock chains but is a good starting point.

Length of your gullet in decimal inches x your desired entry angle in degrees x 0.01745 which is the constant.

Example:

Gullet length 5/16 inch ( .3125 inch ) x desired entry angle of 6.5 degrees x the constant 0.01745= 0.035445325

= 35 Thousandths raker setting for 6.5 degrees.

There are a pile of angle variables.Entry angle may need adjustment depending where you are filing your inside top plate angle and outside top plate angle. Example : Less than 45 degrees for the top and/or more than 20 for the outside may end up needing more raker height depending on your saw.

I know I know it looks like a lot of work and insane. Do you think that I do that stuff with all of my chains. Nope - I'm not that crazy. Most chains I grab a file and do what need done. Some of my newer decent chains I do quick measurement of the gullet on 2 or 3 cutters, run the formula for a baseline, see how many file strokes it takes one cutter to get to the raker height and do rest of the chain guesstimating. Fun short chains -- why not take the time...
