Chain gauge and making up my mind

I stopped in to visit the local husqvarna dealer today so I could get some new chains for my ported 350. All they had was the safety link .325 x .058 that I already have (I bought two and will grind off the safety humps to get through winter.). I really wanted regular full chisel. Even the stihl dealer didn’t have it.

I asked about going to 3/8 chain and he said he could get a .058 bar, but no .050. Is it that hard to find a 3/8 x .050 small mount husky bar? I just want to have the same chain on my main working saws so I can make/repair them myself in the future without having to remember what saw has what.

I have my grinder set up for .050, so my cutters end up slightly different lengths when I sharpen .058 unless I move the stop for the second side.

I’d find a new dealer. Your not far from tree monkey and I know I’ve gotten a small mount husky in 3/8 .050 from him before

I left him a message but have not heard back yet. I know he could set me up right. I’m looking for something in the 18-20” range.

I spent about 20 minutes on the belt grinder removing the safety humps, thinning the rakers, and lowering the rivet heads ~.012 on one of the new chains. I’m going to clean out under the teeth in a bit. I just want to see what it will do. I’m not making a full race chain, just giving it an edge, lol. This safety crap cuts like crap.

Personally I'd call Gregg at Left coast supplies unless I wanted to make the drive to Scott's. They'll be able to get you the bar you need to get set up with whatever chain you want to run.

I think I’ll try to get a hold of tree monkey again. I really want to try it before diving in, lol.
I’m going to try the loop I hit with the belt grinder and see how it cuts, just to see. I have been wanting to get some footage of the finished saw, and I have a maple that needs to come down, so it’s a good opportunity. I still have to sharpen it and lower the rakers, but it should do better than stock. I thinned the rakers, ground .012 off the rivets, removed the bump under the tooth, touched the back of the teeth, and removed the safety humps.

I stopped in and bought a few chains from Chris at the @TreeMonkey85 shop. We shot the bull for a while and he said I could come back and try out a few combo’s to see what I really liked. He had someone show up to buy a car so we had to cut the visit short. I really liked his idea of a 22” bar in .325 x .050.

Glad you got to go down there. I wish the Stihl dealer in my town was half as cool. Or that Scott's place was just a little closer. And just to clarify, it's @tree monkey that you're talking about.

I tried to tag tree monkey, but it only showed the other one, so I figured maybe he changed his screen name. Maybe I didn’t use a space.

I met Scott years ago at a gtg in Grantsburg, WI. I ran his ported 660/066 and that’s what got me hooked on ported saws. Not it has developed into a sickness and the only medication is working on more saws. It’s a good thing I have a few to work on.
