Has anyone used a Meteor piston in a MS661?

I have just acquired a MS661C really cheap and although it runs, it has done a lot of work and compression is down (just under 150psi). I'm wondering if a top end refresh is in order; has anyone had any experience with the meteor/caber combination on these saws?

Is the original piston bad? Around here brand new saws only get 150 psi.

Maybe just new rings in the original piston is all you’d need if anything at all

Hello Deets, thanks for your reply. Remember me? I sold you the HS246 but have now changed my screen name. I had no idea that they were so low compression from factory! I was expecting a good 175psi like my MS461. Here's the piston through the muffler:

Doesn't look too bad, do you think? Maybe some rings when I get a chance. Also, can anyone tell me how a base gasket delete on these go? Anything to watch out for?
Look at this......I'm going to upgrade it to a Maxflow as soon as I can!!!

It really depends on your elevation as to what your compression should be.
I’d just put a set of cabers in it and be happy.

I’d definitely get the max flo, good setup they have for the 661

I think I just figured out what the problem is with Stihl filtration...they took 'air filter' literally.

Have you checked the squish? I don't know how much these saws benefit from a base gasket delete but it should give u more compression.. and a new set of rings

I don't know if I'm looking in the wrong place but I couldn't see Cabers for a 661 at HL? Maybe @Gentleman can help me? I'll check the squish too and see what it is.

Good Day,

Looks like you are missing an important part, in that third picture.

There is supposed to be a gasket, foam doughnut, on the post that holds the air filter/cover in place.

Without it there is a void that unfiltered air can pass right into the engine.

Sorry Larry, I should have noted that I removed it before taking the picture. It was there but it was coated with oil and fines.

Are 661 rings 56mm X 1.2mm ?

Well, I got an email from Josh at HL Supply, he says they don't stock Cabers for the MS 661, but if what you say is correct Deets, the same ring as used on the Husky 395 should work. Luckily the genuine article from Stihl NZ isn't a too bad price so I might go down that track. Squish is at .039 stock so a base gasket delete should work well and could be done at the same time.

Interesting fact about the saw, I got my friendly local dealer to check on the ser#. It was sold new into forestry (we have large plantations of Radiata Pine (Pinus Radiata aka Monterey Pine) here in NZ) on the 27th of February this year so its just done 8 months work. And it looks like its done more work than some saws do in a lifetime! Things like the starter pulley and pawls are well worn and need replacing and the white cover that clips inside the starter cover has vibrated loose and has been rubbing on the flywheel.

Some interesting facts I just noted about the Monterey Pine plantations here in NZ, apparently we've got the largest planted forest in the world:

"The Monterey pine (always called Pinus radiata in New Zealand) was first introduced into New Zealand in 1859 and today 89% of the country's plantation forests are of this species. This includes the Kaingaroa Forest on the central plateau of the North Island which is the largest planted forest in the world. Mass plantings became common from 1900 in the Rotorua area where prison labour was used. In some areas it is considered an invasive species (termed a wilding conifer or more commonly wilding pine) where it has escaped from plantations. It is the most extensively used wood in New Zealand."

No wonder we have large numbers of clapped out MS660's popping up for sale all over the place! And MS661's that look like they've been used 8hrs a day for 8 months. Where I brought my 661 from is right in the area of the Kiangaroa forest noted above.
