Mine was dang near a headbanger with no gasket. 12 or 14 thou iirc. Used the thinnest gasket paper I had with the thinnest layer of motoseal I could get on each side. Ended up at .023 installed & called her good.

She any difficult to start?

Decomp is a must. Feels like it’s for the recoil starter’s benefit, but my shoulder wouldn’t take too many tries.

The problem I have is this lives on a large estate where I am now part-time forester(vs full time previously). So multiple people use this saw. If they can not start it - they then go to MS390 and commence to destroying that saw instead of easily handling the task with the 281. Well, 'better' handling the task let's say.
BTW, an MS390 sells for €800 msrp in Ireland.

This is the sort of stuff that lives on the estate and finds the ground very often.

I can’t post videos from my phone directly but I got my 281/288 highbred up and running again. Whoo hooo!!! Between waiting on parts and time to “play” in the garage, it is finally back together.

Btw, I love the fact that it was split and completely drained of fuel, but will still pop after 4 pulls and run on the 5th.
