My sister who lives below my mom and dad said that a couple months ago she heard a load boom, but never identified what it was. I was over at my mom and dad's last Wed picking up the girls and discovered this in their backyard. I want y'alls opinion on it, first does it look like a lightning strike victim? The bark is curled from the meat of the tree. And whats the life expectancy from here. It's still full of foliage. I worry about it falling and causing major property loss or catastrophic loss. Told my mom and dad we need to get it down and to turn it into their homeowners insurance. Insurance may not want to pay, but a removal is far cheaper than rebuilding a home.

Definitely a lightning strike. i have seen trees keep on living and some seem to die right away. From your pics this tree got a good shot and i would expect to see it die over the next year or two. i would wait till the sap is down before i had it taken down. nice white oak for firewood.

My concern is what cannot be seen internally. That tree is divided by two massive leads (that are the size of good size trees themselves). If the upper lead goes, it will destroy 2 buildings if it direction of 12 o’clock, and my parents house if it falls at 2-3 o’clock. The lower lead would destroy privacy fence (worst case scenario the neighbors deck or house).

I don’t want to wait for it to die and risk it splitting and falling, if it’s hit and will die anyways, I want to do it on my terms, not mother nature’s.

No hollow spot, the bark is curled and the meat of the trunk is black/moist down the crack.

If it’s alive and does property damage when it falls, then it’s covered under insurance under act of GOD. If its dead, then the homeowner is responsible. It’s no fun to rebuild a good structure. Holler if you need any help when the time comes. I will gladly come help cut and haul when it’s on the ground.

Well howdy neighbor. Born and raised in east
Knoxville. Live in Sharps Chapel in Union county now.

A mini GTG sounds great to me if you need help.

We are going to hire the drop out, and to save my folks money we are going to let them drop and go. So there will be lots of processing to be done. If y'all are interested in getting in on the wood, Holler at me and once we get it down will get a mini scheduled. This tree is a Monster! My biggest bar 32" will require a cut from both sides to get thru the trunk.

I've got good ropes, saddle, spurs, etc.

You're welcome to use them. I'm not up for it anymore.

I have spikes and harnesses too, and have gone up several in years past. I don't fool with much climbing anymore since I had my babies. On this sucker, its gonna take rigging, and we need to hire it out to someone bonded and insured. Too much at stake.

I haven't measured the tree yet, but those a 6' fence pickets in the pics, mentally using one of them for refrence and turning it sideways, that trunk is wider than 6' at the base.
