Totally underestimated 40ccm Saw

Hi There,

I was told that it would be nice to post something about the Echo - Shindaiwa 390 SX in this place.

2017 I bought a new light weight chainsaw because my Stihl MS201 got blow up. Because I hade some problem with the M-Tronic on this specific model, I dont wont to go with another 201. Husqvarna don't ve a pro 40 or 35ccm Saw since the 339 is gone.

So my buddy told me there is a new 40ccm Saw from Echo on the market. The 390 SX. In Germany the 390 SX is only available as a Shindaiwa. No difference accept the color. Because I'm totally Okay with my Echo 501 SX I decided to go with the 390.

My first toughs: Very small, looks similar to my 501 and very torque for a just 40ccm saw. But the chain and bar isnt right for it. It come stock with a 325 chain and 16" bar - I'm sure it will be better with a 15" and 3/8 Picco Chain.

So, there are 400 Kubikmeter to cut. Very smal spruce. So its the right size for this saw.

First try with a new bar and 3/8 Picco chain. Cuts a lot more better:

One thing I dont like is the Muffler Kat the saw ve. But for a few bucks you can buy a new muffler from the ECHO 501 that will fit plug any play and dont ve a Kat.

- high torqu for 40ccm
- very light
- feels solid
- metall handle
- starts always the first time

- bad AV system

Hmm, is this the saw you have? It is sold as the Echo 490/Shindaiwa 491 over here. It is a 50cc saw, sort of an economy 501:

Oops, my bad. Apparently the 390 is one we can't get over here.

If it's new there it may be available here in the US in awhile. The 501 was like that. It was released as the 501sx over there quite a while before we got it here.

Hmm, the general architecture looks the same as the 490/500/501. Is the 390 the same saw with less displacement?

Sure looks like a 490/500/501. I think you hit the nail on the head. A smaller piston with same stroke would seem to support the torque comments from the op.

It have a rubber AV System. Springs would be better.

Because of Echo 501 VS 390, let me show the weight comparession. No Bar on the Saw, Fuel and Oil Tank is full on both. The 390 ve the Kat removed.

So, a little of Topic: My Echo 620 SX, 390 SX and 501SXH are now running for 1 up to 2 years with now fail. Nothing, really nothing got broken. Dont know this is possible. There will be a new Video of my 501 and 620 in the next few weeks if you are interested.

Oh yes. So I dont really post anymore in the German Motorsägen-Forum. I'm not a Echo Fan Boy. Like you see on my Youtube chanel, I have had saws from Husqvarna, Stihl, Dolmar, Fuxtec and Echo. All saws have there pros and cons.

I ve the Echo 680 and 8002 for testing. I would never buy these saws because they are totally stocked in 1970 Also the Echo 620 isnt as light and fast as a 562XP - but the 620 wont brake if you used it at 32° in the summer

Here's the older brother, also underrated:

The Echo CS-3900. About the same size, tough, and hard to kill. Circa 1995. They are also hard to find. Owners hang onto them.

Don't worry, the Creamsicle church has plenty of priests here too! I'm a Dolmar and Echo fanboy but I like all kinds of saws.
