This is going to be a standard Wagner thread with rediculously long spans of time between posts. :)

I started collecting for my small engine driven chain mill. I have to find some metal yet, but most of it is already laying around here in my mess. Here's the start...20180709_213503.jpg 20180709_225706.jpg

It's not much, but I have a lot of the odds and ends gathered too. I have pullys and either an electric or centrifugal clutch to drive the chain. I'm going to use a jack shaft with a rim drive sprocket center on a turned shaft end to hold the drive rim. I plan to set it up much like a Norwood's mill with the motor riding on a track beside the log. It should be easy enough to make the depth adjustment work. I don't know the guy on YouTube that built one sort of like this, but his trial and error helped me come up with the plans in my mind... Lol

More to come.... A long time from now...

Too see what your doing on the frame and how your

This guys frame is where I got a few ideas, but I'm still leaning toward the Norwood's mill style with the track sitting beside the log. It really opens up a lot of cutting options for odd shapes and different size logs. I can't decide if the bar will need the support if it's 36". Norwood's recommends I think a 24-8" max. I assumed that was for avoiding sag.

here's the demo video of the Norwood's mill. The biggest negative is the ladder is too flimsy for a track. The next is the $1200 chainsaw... Not that I don't have mill saws, but the Briggs will have benefits...

I'm not sure about the lift system, but I'm leaning toward this guys style...Screenshot_2018-06-13-22-58-44.png
Some guys use cable winches, but that seems too eh to me...

The engine mounted like that in the photo is what I’ve been thinking of rather than a saw fixing it with a bar adjuster is the next hurdle

I'm just not seeing the issue there. Have you ever seen the old saws with bar mount and adjuster? You could even use an old clutch cover.

Are you talking about the height adjustment or chain tension?

I'm going to use a jack shaft to a plate. My drive rim will be mounted to the shaft and the bar will bolt to the plate. I was just planning on using a normal chainsaw style setup on the plate that bolts the bar down... I'll try to find a pic or draw it or just build that part soon. I'm in the process of switching jobs/starting my own business so time is limited, but that's really nothing new here :)

So Kris, just thinking out loud here.. if you're going this far, why not run a band instead? It's much quicker, no bar oil, less waste, the list goes on. Check out the vids (a whole series showing the build):

I looked at it a lot and you are totally right, but I have almost everything to build this and it has advantages for just milling slabs and wide crotch chunks. One other thing I thought about is the rails will work if I build a band mill at a later date. If the stuff I'm doing takes off, I'll likely buy a used band mill and just sell this one or repurpose it.
