Trees already cut and down you can come and takes as much as you want. Most of the tree can be milled. Oak, cedar, and others.

People give away stacked firewood all the time around here on craigslist. I only take un-split oak 100 lb or less most times. Most has to be handcarted out or noodle and load it, mostly seasoned, never green, no thanks. Most of it is maple, yard trees of hardwoods. Punky on the top of the pile from leaves falling.
Most are too lazy to move the top three rotten rows. Some won't take the punk if your watched over to make sure it goes first. Lazy...The punk is perfect mulch. Dummies I tell ya.

I heard every story from it's rotten, we dont burn wood now, my son was going to split and sell it, we just bought the place so get ALL that bug infested *s-word outa my yard and I'll pay you cash, how much? I'd love to be able to get free firewood, don't really care about species nor condition!
But that sort of thing is impossible to encounter in Croatia.

Private parties log illegally large healthy trees with the only intent to resell them preprocessed to other private parties that don't want to, or can't bother with logs.

The profit gained by legally obtaining logs, then pre or fully processing them and sell is marginal.
Very few go this way, but this is considered legal and one is not obliged to register and report to the VAT system.
Some do this for a small side income.

The Croatian forest's are not free to log for just anyone.
A logging permission has to be obtained in order to be allowed to extract firewood from the forests.
Even then one is only allowed to extract downed trees, and trees that are specifically marked for removal from only a specifically designated location.

My best guess is that about 3 out of 4 Croatian households heat with firewood, most households require significantly more than 10 cubic meter of firewood per season!
The demand is extremely high, opportunity seekers are plenty.

I purchase legal firewood logs delivered into my yard.
I require an average 7 cubic meters annually.
I heat with one stove in the kitchen and one free standing cast iron fireplace in the living room.

I have one and a half large sized oak logs left to play with and this week has an extended weekend due to a holiday - I intend to play those logs into small pieces.

Will give each saw a couple bucking cuts so they don't feel neglected.

I got a call from a friend who still owes me a ton of bread I loaned him to have his dentures installed. He cut down an ash tree and bucked it all to length. He thought $100 off his loan balance was about right for his work if I hauled away the free firewood in my pickup truck. Of course all the big rounds had to be split.

Anyway, I agreed over the phone. When I got there, I ran into a pile of logs. No two were cut the same length, about half were too heavy for one man to lift, the pile was down in a ditch, and the ditch was downhill from the road and inaccessible from the truck. Yep, "free firewood" all right.

Doing well as can be expected. I have some "free" firewood that I never wanted. My 37 year-old pin oak tree died suddenly. It had a full crown and was healthy in December. No leaves at all in April, and several tree surgeons say it's dead as a hammer:

How it died that fast nobody can explain. The Hosta underneath are healthy, so that more or less rules out herbicide. I've been told that oak wilt can't kill that fast either. There was not a single dead branch on this tree last year. The tree ring was installed in 2014, and the tree flourished for nearly four years with that in place.

Anyway, it's history -- 46 feet tall and 28" at the base. All other pin oaks in the neighborhood are healthy. I planted this tree.

Well, there are a few diehards that think my tree may not be dead. I recall that gypsy moth caterpillars in Connecticut could completely defoliate an oak tree and the next year it would come back alive. However, that defoliation took place in early summer after the tree was completely leafed out. Regardless, two years of that moth in a row would kill the tree.

This killer, whatever it was, did the deed in January and February after the tree had already dropped its leaves. It's as if all the roots were completely devoured and are totally incapable of feeding the branches. I've never seen anything like it and neither has anyone else.

Thank you, and I will do that, at least until October. By then, branches should start falling off along with bark flaking away, assuming it's dead. Somebody said a flash freeze in late March could have killed all the buds, but the roots may still be alive. Here are two more Pics:
The hosta now covers the area around the tree like a thick blanket.

I love this tree. I am still rooting for it to recover.

Lightning strike maybe, direct or indirect...Doesn't appear to be direct as there are no signs.

Never thought of that, but it's entirely possible. An indirect strike is more likely. I have examined it carefully for anything that resembles a direct hit and found no burn marks. The tree and my house are located atop a hill called Miracle Hill. Only a few trees stand above it, but they are about 400 yards away. An indirect lightning hit in early April just may have been the killer.

There do seem to be two holes in the bark near the base right at the bottom that have formed since mid-April. That might be the exit point of an indirect lightning strike. Hmmm...
