Decided we needed some more reading material. Thanks to some friends, both local and on here, I'll be able to save this saw.

So I met a local guy at the PA gtg who inquired about porting his old 385xp. He said he had new bearings installed a few years ago, but they didn't hold up. Upon inspection with him at the gtg, the pto case half bearing pocket was wallered out. No big deal as long as most of the other parts are serviceable. I didn't get a pic of the partially disassembled saw as I received it, but you'll get the jist of it. She's gonna need some serious cleaning.

Figured I'd pick up a used case half and throw some new bearings at it. Then I saw this...
Seems like a rather large gap between the rod and crank weights.

So far, I've been able to scrounge a case, crank, and piston from my stash and members here. New bearings, gaskets, seals, and carb boot are on order from my local dealer and should be here early next week

Wow it's pretty rough lol. Should make for a good build thread.
Might've made more sense using it as a parts saw. Hind sight is 20/20, I guess. But still, it's gonna be hard to buy a ported 385 with new bearings, gaskets, and seals for what he'll have into it

So how many pieces are actually gonna be reused?

I split the cases and noticed the crank had started to separate and was wearing into the clutch side case.

The previous bearing installer took a toll on the end of the crank with his trusty hammer
Oh well. It's getting a new/used oem crank anyway

Haven't seen a crank come apart before. I've heard of it happening on the Solo 681, but not on a husky. Any ideas on why? I'm thinking the added movement from the loose bearing had something to do with it

I haven’t seen it in saws, but banshees all the time, Even good bearing, the weight of the flywheel pulls that side apart. I bet when they hammered that crank, to took the crank out of true, and tons of hours, probably a bunch of factors! On banshee a 250rs I have the crank pins tig welded so they don’t move!

Have you played with these saws a bunch?
what have you tried that failed and what has worked for porting? Or what have you tried and what did you change for what reason?
