Was looking for information on 661 coils and stumbled upon this 661 tech bulletin. (Open the PDF file attached to this post.)

Beginning with serial no. 1 83 981 428, STIHL
MS 661 C-M chain saws will be equipped with the
new STIHL M-Tronic™ software version 3.0.

Just figured it might be useful to some members. New part #s. New unit. and the new calibration procedure. eek!

edit: attached 2 pictures - I just got this 661R about a month ago (see attached pics), Serial on my 661R # is - 1 83 981 304. Looks like mine was produced only 100ish units prior to the start of this new Ver 3.0 stuff. (1 83 981 428)

Here is what the label looks like. D.O.M is 10/17 (see attached pics)

Looks like the primary focus is an attempt to finally iron out the various 661 ECU issues once and for all with a backward compatible platform that addresses everything else already out there too. Would seem to address any additional gen 3 upgrades to whatever current products get them or are introduced with gen 3 as a new product or new variant of an existing one. Would assume it also covers the 500i stuff in a similar manner and has actually been out for a while. We just haven't known about it.

I'm certainly interested in anything else anyone knows about this as I may be getting my hands on a MDG-1 setup in the not too distant future..., like maybe Wed. or Thur. if the current version is actually in stock at the regional distributor.

I don't think there is one for any other v2 saws except what was detailed for the 661..., at least not that has been released as a tech bulletin with actual part number upgrades for other ECU's. I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm mistaken.

I don't think it happens automatically to old saws like a flash upgrade to your router. LOL

I presume what is meant is that M-tronic saws from here on out will be based on the V3 platform. To date, the only one that seems to be upgradeable from an earlier version (via yet another version of ECU) is the 661. Will be interesting to see if new coils start popping up for older versions of the other saws if they haven't already. I simply don't know if they have or haven't and would certainly welcome any enlightenment there.

Good point. Must be like a new computer module on board. New software too.
The older versions probably cannot upgrade. They are what they are.

It looks like the saw with adjust rpm, even though the throttle fully depressed. It will not be full rpm the entire calibration period.
I agree, I took it to mean it's going to creep up on the high rpm limit then I would assume take it rich to lean a few times to monitor response to fuel trim changes and then pick it's happy spot.
