Both the carbon bar and my Total Lightweight 28" is milled out and ready for the 066 now. Gonna be awesome! The Total bar must have spring steel or something in it. My buddy said it was a little bit of a beeatch to mill it.
Must be why the solid machined bars are more expensive than the laminated ones.

The Yapanese guide bars are made with much better/harder steel than the Oregon/Blount/Forester, et al manufactured bars. The difference when milling, or modifying is quite noticeable.

Congratulations sir.
Takk!

I finaly got around pretending actiong like I know something. I hacked on a 18 stihl bar they give you coming from the stihlership. I did the flexxy flexxy test by clamping the tip to the bench then having saw trolls favorite saw ever my ms290 hang on the other side so uncut it sagged 28.7 mm and bar weighed 33.2 oz after cutting it weighed 20oz and sagged 42.51mm Screenshot_2016-11-23-15-57-15.pngScreenshot_2016-11-23-15-57-11.png It didnt mill the way I wanted it to because of this waffle crap in the middle so I am thinking biscuts or something to hold the plexie glass in place

So, is it safe to assume that plasma cutting a hole in a bar would wreck the temper?

*Posted this on AS, related to the Oregon Speedcut bars ( http://www.arboristsite.com/communi...f-chain-and-speedcut-guide-bars.285694/page-8 ). My attempts to judge the effects of lighter weight and stiffness might apply to evaluating these other lightweight bars:

Angle of the Dangle

Weight is not everything. It has more of an effect on longer bars, especially out towards the tip, due to leverage. So I wanted to see what effect the lighter bar had on saw balance.

I suspended the 353 (empty tanks) from an overhead beam using a couple of ropes, so that it could pivot, and find its own balance point. I attached a carpenter's angle gauge to the only flat spot I could find (rear hand guard) with zip-ties and twisty-ties, to get relative angle measurements (yeah, I could do better in a 'real' laboratory, but this is what I had). I measured:

IMG_0432.jpg
- (? unbranded) 16" nominal length: 21 ounces total weight
- Oregon SpeedCut 20" nominal length: 23.5 ounces
- Husqvarna branded, 20" nominal length; 28.6 ounces

IMG_0433.jpg Power Head Only (PHO) - 14°

IMG_0435.jpg Power Head with 16" conventional, NK bar -

IMG_0439.jpg Power Head with 20" SpeedCut NK bar -

IMG_0441.jpg PowerHead with 20" conventional bar -

Small differences with bars this length - full fuel tank would probably hide it even more. Larger effect likely with longer bars.

Flexibility

I was primarily interested in relative flexibility between the SpeedCut and conventional NK bar, so I used each as a reference for the other. I clamped both 20" bars to a sturdy table at the end of the bar adjustment slot (slightly longer on the SpeedCut bar, so I used that point for both tests).
IMG_0424.jpg

I used 15 pounds of weight to estimate a large powerhead, hung just behind the nose sprocket rivet farthest from the tip (same on both bars), and measured the separation. Flipped the bars over and tried it again.
IMG_0425.jpg

The SpeedCut bar flexed only about 1-5/8 inches: the conventional NK bar was closer to 1-7/8 inches. About a 1/4 inch difference.

So this SpeedCut bar does appear to be lighter and stiffer. The stiffness is likely to be more noticable with narrow kerf chain users. The reduced weight will probably be more of a factor with longer length bars used with larger pitch chain.

Any progress?
I was curious.

I've been working/slacking on a 36" for about 6 months now. My buddy who mills them for me just started working in FL, so this one might be the last one I'll be able to make.

Here's a couple of before and after pics. I haven't gotten the carbon for it yet, but I'm trying a different manufacturer this time.

I wonder who came up with that signature dot dot dot? Lol

The weights are:
Stock bar 82.55 ounces, or 2339 grams.
Cut out bar 40.70 ounces, or 1155 grams. I expect to end up with a 35% weight saving, ish....

Thanks for that Philbert, I always prefer objective evidence over someone's 'opinion'. When I wear out my next NK bar, I'll be replacing it with a 'SpeedCut'.
