Very nice. Although, Lyman hasn't changed much at all since that time. My Lyman manuals from 1992 and 2012 are little different other than some powders have disappeared from the 2012 and some new ones have appeared.

Can you even buy 2x and 4x without permits?

If you're referring to black powder, then yes you can buy it over the counter. Now 1x and 4x for cannon and flash powder respectively can be hard to find, but it's nothing to buy it.

I still have 2x and 4x about half cans left. Is there a alternative to black powder 1,2,3,4x out now?

Is 2x and 4x another term for FFG and FFFFG? You can buy real blackpowder at Reloader's Supply in Richmond or by mail order. If I ever get back into sidelocks that is exactly what I will use. With an inline there is no need to search it out or pay hazmat fees when substitutes work so well. Especially Triple 7, love that stuff! As far as I know, all the substitutes are designed to be a volume equivalent to blackpowder, not weight, and can be used in any gun intended for blackpowder.

That is what we damn Yankees called 2x = ffg 4x ffffg. Does the new alternative burns a lot faster?

As far as burn rate goes I don't know. My understanding is that Pyrodex is the most similar to black powder in terms of chemical makeup and pressure/velocity curve. The other subs such as Triple 7 and American Pioneer are made from completely different ingredients, chemically much closer to smokeless than BP. This explains their higher velocity and lower corrosive by-products. The best description I can come up with is that most subs are bulky and inefficient "smokeless" powders which produce similar pressures to black powder when used in the same volume.

Alot of folks say that Blackhorn 209 is in fact a smokeless powder which has been formulated to have those same physical and performance characteristics as black powder and other subs. This makes sense, given that the manufacturer plainly states that sidelock guns will not ignite Blackhorn and recommends using oil based solvents for cleanup.

One of my books is an old, cartridges of the world, it has all kinds of loads, duplex, triplex, black powder days.
I have found that unique and 2400 are my go to powders may not be the best but can make a load for almost any caliber.
Zinc is in wheel weights now so keep temp. below 750f. It will float on top.
Lead melts ~650f, zinc ~ 780f if I recall.

I gave up on wheel weights a long time ago. Too much junk in them and I can buy range lead ingots for the same price or less.

Tumbler medium is plain old genric rice from a 50 pound bag.

I hunt clay birds, squirrels, rabbits, partridges, turkeys, deer and coyotes.
I am part of a group of coyote hunters. we have over 40 farms we can hunt thru out a 5 county area.

As for learniung to reload, You said 243. Buy a reloading manual buy several is even better. there is sections in every one I own and have looked at that walk you thru the steps of reloading.
I suggest a single stage press to start with dies for 243. I suggest you buy a good decent balance beam scale to start also, it is usefull later on when you geta digital set up to double check the digital unit is doing what it is supposed to do.

I started cleaning my cases with Bichwood Casy case cleaner and a plastic jar, onion net bag to dry them in.

Keep records, good records may some day come in handy as it did for me and my brother.

Even today each and every drop of powder for the rifles gets measured so they are all the same weight. been reloading for 50 years.

Welcome Al. I think I recognize you from AS.
That press is an oldie. The aluminum primer catch tray is something I haven't seen in a long time.
