Alright gents my little enterprise continues to grow. I have an opportunity to pick up a used like new Woodmaxx Chipper WM-8H with the extra knives and belts for about $1000 less than new. So $2100 and the time and money in diesel to pick it up, 2 hrs each way.

I have two jobs right now that I need a chipper on.

Rental cost will be $700, I only have the machine a limited time, time and weather become a bit of a concern. I’m a one man operation and feeding the machine and trying to get done before my rental period is up may kill me, lol.
Good news is I can pass the rental cost onto the customer.

Or I can buy a Woodmaxx for $2K, charge the customer to help pay off the unit and best of all work at my lea-sure. Neither customer is in a big hurry, they are close so I could drive the tractor and chipper down to them (no truck or trailer time) and chip for a bit here and a bit there.

The other consideration is the rental unit would be a commercial 12” monster and eat everything much faster. The drawback is the timing and the fact I’d have to get it all done at a fast pace.

I feel I could buy the Woodmaxx, run it for these jobs and if I didn’t need it for a few months sell it for what I purchased her for.

I have been very lucky and the vast majority of my tree work has not included chipping. I have simply told the people I handle the big stuff and the limbs are left for you to take care of. Most are in rural areas and simply agree and start a burn pile.

What do you guys think?

Thanks, I talked to the wife and she agrees. I missed my first opportunity to get it because I hesitated. He’s got a buyer coming on Friday (he’s got a tractor for sale and that’s what people are looking at) so if the guy doesn’t want the Chipper it’s mine. Fingers crossed. I should know Friday evening, Wish me luck.

Good luck hope you get it. The rental deal just isn't worth it in the long run.

Well as usual I was a day late dollar short. I work 24 hr shifts and couldn’t get out to get it.
Interesting thing is I started researching a bunch of them and found Woodmaxx is just one of a bunch of machines from China. So I stumbled on a company from California that sells a similar (almost exact machine) chipper, called a Victory.

It’s about $650 cheaper and specs out the same. I’ve been looking to find or hear from some Victory equipment owners for opinions and reviews.

The company has answered all my questions even though they are closed they respond to my emails promptly. I may have to give them a shot.

as everyone has said buy it youve already got a good bit paid on it already why earn it from the customer
then give it too the rental company once word gets around you got a decent chipper
youll get as much work as you need or want come summer as yu know people arent as keen to have a burn pile

Well I slept on it and pulled the trigger this AM on the Victory WC8H . It should be here in 2 weeks, I will report back with a new thread, honest review and video. Someone needed to give them a shot, guess I’ll either be a hero or a big dummy. I’m used to the latter, lol.

Thanks Gents, Rye.

I see the backhoes Victory offer are the same as the ones on sdideals.com that I was looking at. No idea where they are made but the pictures on their site are close enough to tell the warning stickers are in another language. I'm not saying they are being deceptive just that it looks like they sell the off name brand equipment as well.

Oh no doubt this chipper is from China, but so are most of them.

Sorry, I was reading into your post and thought you were saying they were made in CA. I shoukd have been tipped off since you said they were a little cheaper than woodmax.

WoodMaxx is also made in China. I found that out after some digging, that’s when I figured I might as well give it a shot if they are all Chinese clones.

Well she arrived in a nice metal framed box yesterday, of course at 5:30pm in my 9-5 window. HA! I will say even dry this is a heavy bugger at a little over 1000lbs. The 200lb flywheel helps.
We are having a rain/snow event so I probably won’t start assembly till Thursday, then I’m assuming I’ll have to let it dry out a bit. Chipping wet material seems like a disaster waiting to happen. I’ll probably have to wait till Saturday or next week to get some test run time in. Then I’ve got to put her to work and make some money rather than spend it.
I will keep this thread up to date for anyone interested. This was a big purchase and I hope it works out. It boggles my mind most of these name brand PTO Chippers are $1800+ and they are Manual feed, not even mechanical but Manual. So for $2145.00 shipped to my door with Hydraulic In feed, while still a fortune if it works out will be a homerun.
I assure you I will be critical of the machine and I’m sure there will be a few bumps along the way. Stay tuned...

The difference with Woodmaxx is you are paying a bit more for them to have already figured out what breaks and have replaced it before it goes out to you. They swap out parts and go with American made blades, etc.
Is the warranty the same between the Woodmaxx and cheaper option?

*ETA* - looks like the woodmaxx warranty is 3 years and the victory is one year. Price difference is $135. Not sure of the exact differences between the machines.

I thought woodmaxx was made in the US. I do see where they say they are USA based

Price difference was $650, my warranty is 2 standard is 1 but all I did was question it and I got 2 vs 3 with Woodmaxx, blades on the Victory are USA made.

WoodMaxx is not USA made, dig a bit and you will find the truth. As I go thru this machine more I am beginning to believe they both come off the same assembly line in China. Look at the WoodMaxx with the optional green color, specs are the same, so what gives????

I have no association with Victory, I paid the full $2145 price.
The difference I see thus far after receiving the machine is the top link (for 3 point) on the WoodMaxx is different and the feet are skids instead of simple feet. I don’t see a huge need for either difference.
