What does raising a metering lever do?
Opens the needle ealier/easier. Feeds more fuel/more available. Too high and she will flood. Too low it starves. It's a balancing act because raising the lever you can affect pop pressure. It's not an end all...just a way to fudge in a little extra fuel in this case.

I had multiple saws do this same/similar problem.

short story long.

aftermarket fuel lines will turn soft with a little fuel.

I only use oem fuel line.

I also had a problem with aftermarket crank seals on an 026. bought 5 sets cheap, I used 4 of them as soon as I started the saw the seals would fail.

oem seals and the saw is still making chips.

fwiw I threw out the 5 th set of 026 seals....

I've seen this type of issue when the carb has to high of pop off pressure. The impulse from the pump side isn't strong enough to push open the needle far enough and they run out of fuel when in high demand.

So, what is the solution to pop-off pressure too high?? I've seen it said that there is not guarantee that the metering lever spring supplied in rebuild kits are going to be of the correct strength and because of that I have always re-used the existing spring. What does one do if he loses the original or it is damaged, etc? Cut a wrap or two from the spring??

It's usually after heavy modification the problem shows up. The solution is to nip a few wraps off the spring or use a different one.

You can Google how to properly set the pop off .I've never done but I think Cliff H does .According Rick that's the secret why his saws run so well .

I vowed not to go in the shop last night...but while dewatering the dog I was talking on the phone to a buddy. He said something and I asked "Have you seen my bench lately? ...Neither have I!" I wandered out and spent 10 minutes putting c rap away. I chucked this damn saw on the bench and planned just to knock the B&C off and be done. Well I got a wild hair and said let me look at that fuel pick / filter. I am embarrassed. I had already decided to go through piece by piece as to avoid a shot gun and not know what exactly the issue was. My personality say I want to know what/why/how etc. If the pickup wasn't the issue it'll get another set of new pick up lines. Then we will try another carb. The carb looks new inside and the metering side is set with a Walbro gauge... diaphragm is soft. I had this feeling it was stupid simple... and I hope it was.

The pick up that came out. Note it looked white until I opened it up.

Now I never knew these things come apart so while frustrated... I've learned again. More knowledge to tuck away. New filter in and go again today if I have time.

Also... FWIW...

I ran this saw with an AM from my stash. I also stopped in and purchased a new OEM filter at my "lovely local dealer". $9.00 later I left. I ran this saw with a 91dl bar buried in dry dead red oak. I saw no difference in RPMs and I did not touch the screws between my AM or OEM filter. If anything it was a touch lower idle (100-200 rpm) with AM indicating slightly more flow. Top RPM loaded and unloaded was the same.

I am not saying that all AM filters work.. but for $9.00 for the large black Stihl filters...I'll keep trying AM.

The saw is back in service at the saw mill as of 2:00 this afternoon.

Did you put in a carb kit. They'll do this if the metering diaphragm is stiff.
I have not. Metering diaphragm is real supple.. can put a kit in though.

This was my next step and a very note worthy suggestion. I have seen several carbs clean but not run due to a stiff metering diaphragm. HLs are real bad for this.

Jimmy, the AM internal filter media usually will work for a few days but the gasoline turns a lot of them to a mush like material. I bought a dozen of the big orange filters from Forrester, likely Huztl supplied and they looked great but very quickly caused problems. I pulled the center core out and just run the outer screen, they work good that way in my modified 026`s.
