Have you noticed any good or bad things about drilling the baffle out on the 461???

I modded the baffle a bit on my brother's 460, and at first did not think it helped, and may have taken away a bit of low end. Then I advanced the timing on it, and it was definitely a stronger saw.

On stock saws, w/o timing advance, I leave the baffle alone and just drill two 1/4" holes in the muff cover (high on rt side).

@MustangMike It could be the saws and not the mufflers. First test I'd do is swap the mufflers and see how they feel. Even with OEM saws, it's not unsuual to have one saw just hooked up better than another. No way those chinese saws are consistant enough that they are all going to feel the same.

@MustangMike i drilled the baffle on my 461 almost completely out, and enlarged the existing exghuast hole some, and of course re-tuned....I can definitely tell she perked up some from stock....

Looks like the muffler design Bob Walker across the border from here started over 30 years ago is getting popular here. Loggers in canada have had those pipes in the mufflers for a long time.

I rarely use an open pipe. If I thought people would be diligent about storing the saw with a cork in the outlet, then I may do it more. And...there's that spark thing to consider......

I like the deflectors you make with a screen under them ,the screen not only keeps crap out like bugs and wood chips ,but they quiet the saw down also .Open pipes make my head hurt after a while .I have noticed if you can get some of the pipe about 2 inches inside the muffler that will quiet them some on the open pipe style though ,my 026 is like that ,it helps it idle better for some reason too ,I am not sure if Bob does that or not to his .

562. Gonna push down the deflector a bit and it’ll be good. Spark arrestor can still be used.
