This just showed up this morning! Brand new 395xp! Just need to tear it down now and get to porting. Muffler mod and tune and throw on the new 36” Cannon Superbar and throw it into some wood!

Yeah not sure why they are so different. The older saw is my 385xp so I assumed they must have engineered it that way due to size or something. But they are very different.
The 394/395’s design dates back about 10 years older than the 385/390. It’s really a big bore 288.

Especially when you look at the porting layout of the 288 and 394 cylinders... Very similar, one's just a lil' more portly. :D

On that note, brother XP_Slinger and I got talking about wondering how the roll-out of the 3-series models went. I did a little digging on Partstree and looking at their IPL's it seems that the 3120 was the first 3xx, followed a couple years later by the 394.. They kind of started with the biggest and worked their way smaller. Funny how they are largely doing the opposite with the 5xx series, with the obvious exception of the 570, 575 and 576. But really, do those three even belong to the same family as the 550, 562, 572 and their de-tuned mag cased counterparts???

Edit: Good lord that's potentially a ridiculous thread jack. For the sake of staying on track, please consider my above query rhetorical and food for thought for another thread....

Wrap handle design changed a bit eh?

Very nice!

One is an Innie and one is an Outtie....
need extra room to cover the extra bottom end that the 395 has.
awesome looking saw BTW....wish mine was so nice. mine looks like it had a rough life....and it has.

I was under the impression that the 181 became the 288xp, which evolved into the 390xp due to EPA changes (about same displacement with quad ports) and spawned the 385 (slightly smaller non-XP brother).

At the same time the 2100 (at the time Husqvarna’s largest saw) was diversified into the 3120 (bigger) and 394xp (smaller). The 394xp then became the 395xp which was due to EPA restrictions, but essentially was the same saw with quad ports and a different muffler.

288 and 394 share the same crank. 288 and 385/390 have nothing in common.

395 crank has the flywheel key cast into the flywheel. The cranks can interchange between the 394/395 but you have to be sure to use the flywheel that matches the crank.

281, 288, 394/5 have the same crank and bottom end bearings (6203 on both sides). 385 and 390 share the same bottom end with 1mm less stroke than the 281/8 and 394/5 have. Compared to the 385/90, consider the 288 a "stroker".

Bores, strokes, and displacment
281- 52mm x 38mm, 81cc
288- 54mm v 38mm, 87cc
394/5- 56mm x 38mm, 94cc
385- 54mm x 37mm, 84cc
390- 55mm x 37mm , 88cc

6203 bearings in the 385/390. Seal in the races on the pto side like the 6202 in a 346
Thanks Mike. I wasn't sure what the bottom end arrangement is on the 385/90 so I didn't want to comment and pass bad info.

That seal in race deal, is that anything like the hen's tooth 242 PTO bearing?? Literally a seal pressed into the outer race sealing against the inner race?
