So I have been hunting for a good condition little saw that has a lot of potential but for silly cheap money..

I think I have it… A little 340 with a toasted top end, I am up for spending minimal funds so did some digging and came up with an old thread from 2010 from Brad about a hot little cheap 350 that would be snapping at the heels of a hot little 346xp.

I have a few bits already to put on this saw in my parts bin, mainly a aluminium 350/46 handle, a 346xp muffler bracket that will need trimming up to fit the upper dog bolt and the bits to make it a 346 oiler if these aren’t adjustable (I haven’t looked yet) and a few spare 45mm cabers to choose from.

I have on order the cylinder riser, a used oem 346xp carb and a decent looking cheapish 350 cylinder with the transfer covers.

I am going to remove the transfer covers to allow me access to widen the hell outta the upper transfers and flow the transfers better. Gonna case match the cylinder to the new riser, delete the gasket, port the muffler, widen the exhaust port, widen the intake and sort the intake lower.

What else could I or should I do for minimum spends..

Pretty much, you do need the 357 elbow & air filter, umm, this fits under a 346 top cover, might not go under 340 cover.
I run 357 carbs on 4 different 346's and only one has the 357 elbow & filter. I've gone back and forth and really can't tell any diff. So in my case I just use the 346 stuff with the 357 carb.

The 340 top cover is the same used on the entire series I believe, other than later versions having primer bulb cutout (340/345/350/353/346). So the 357 carb will fit fine. Swap the 350 dished piston for a 353 piston.

Some how I was under the impression that the 346 filter would not fit the bigger carb, so I just used the bigger filter with the Zama carb 0n the 346oe that I built.
This saw is turning 14939 and I spect I could turn it up some more. My other ported 346 is an ne that Tree Monkey built for me, I sent him a walbro 199 and he uses the entire 357 intake tract cuz he puts some magic in there too.
Both these saws pull 3/8 chain on 16'' bars with great authority
