like the title says...pulled a wood stove out of my living room since it never gets used, it sat on tile that was on a piece of plywood which was screwed to the floor...got that up and found the previous owner had tiled right on top of the floor previously, looks like they hammered the thinset flat(ish) to plywood over it for the new tile ...floors are 8" southern yellow pine...

thansk!

pics? its thinset on a wood floor...pretty simple...

eventually ill refinish it...the whole 1st floor has SYP floors, they all need to be done, i'll be selling the house in the next couple years so i'll probably just do it then...

just want the thinset off the 4 x 4 section of floor, never done anything with tile before, so figured id see if anyone has done it before.
worst case is it chips out the wood and I have to replace a section, but i'd rather not have to

Muriatic acid will take it off. Might hurt the floor though, might not

I screwed around with it for a couple minutes...heavy duty gasket scraper and a 5 in 1 got some big pieces up... looks like they had tiled it right after they installed the floor, as the floor/urethane looks new where I scraped the thinset off.
looks like I should be able to scrape a lot of it off and just tap/hammer the stubborn areas to break it up

KIMG2366.JPG Here is the jack hammer i made when had to get thin set off the floor

Edit : for the ones that think i made the whole tool ,i just welded a chunk of metal to an old air chisel bit ,i did not make the air chisel actual tool ,i did use a grinder ,that i also had nothing in making to sharpen the bit like a chisel .It is also not a jackhammer ,it is an air chisel ,it is sort of like a mini jackhammer though ,and it removes old thinset and tile off a floor rather nice with minimal effort .

Looks like there was quite a bit of machine work involved in that. Did you use the lost wax method to cast the body? Or did you assemble it from a kit?
I edited my post for the confusion sir .

Edit: see this site lets you edit the next day.

Edit 2 See i can do it again to the same post .

Edit 3 I could do this all day .

Edit 4 If i got butthurt over my bad post i could remove it ,and no one would know it was even there

Edit 5 Unless someone quoted it and it ended in their post forever ,than i would be eternally screwed for my bad post .

Edit 6 I wonder if there is a limit to how many times i can edit my post

Edit 7 I feel there may be a change sometime soon in the settings to how much someone can edit the post .

Don't be butthurt, I don't think I've ever seen you make a bad post.

Any chance you'd trade a turkey baster for your customfied jackhammer?
