i used soft solder to check squish on hybrid I built last Saturday and wasn't able to flatten the solder anywhere. Solder is 50 thousandths so do I have enough room to take base gasket out. If I remember what I read you need like 20-25 thousandths but just double checking.

I'd remove the base gasket and recheck the squish with solder on top of the piston at the 12,3,6,9 o'clock positions. You can use a small dab of grease on the piston to hold the solder in place.
Remember when checking squish with solder that the actual squish will likely be a couple thou smaller then what the solder measures.IMG_5288.JPG

Ok I'll find some thinner solder. Was thinking that if the .50 doesn't flatten then I was safe to pull the base gasket. So I'll find thin solder to check with no gasket. Wasn't sure what I was going to do but maybe if it's tight my uncles had his own machine shop for 30 years. Could always have him turn the piston. How about plastigauge anyone ever try that for squish? Just remember my uncle using it on bearing caps in a 351 once.

Plastigauge will work but it often sticks to the cylinder head and is difficult to get a reading on it when stuck up there, also can`t trust a reading if its peeled off the head. The plastigauge has to also be just the right diameter for the clearance being used as it will squish out to a pre determined width only and read with the gauge on the wrapper included, it cannot be removed and checked with a mic or vernier caliper.

Put a few clamshell saws together with black permatex form a gasket #2 non hardening and that’s seemed to work ok too. Saws been running for quite awhile. Actually the motoseal seams very similar to form a gasket #2. It’s rated to be for Gas and oil contact also. Would actually be curious how much difference there is between them.

Plastigauge sort of has a limited range for checking clearances this large, the HPY1, yellow jacket is only good for checking .009 to .020 gaps, its the largest diameter product I could find so if the squish is larger than .020 it won`t even register.

The yellow is about .032" thick if I remember right. It will work down to .009

Wasn’t trying to start a debate just wondering if plastiguage works. The solder does for sure just thought it might be easier using plastigauge but I didn’t think about it sticking to cylinder side where it would be tough to measure
