Sooooooo...If a 394 carb bolts up to the 288; could a 394 HD filter elbow be used on the stock 288 carb? Left field I know, just spit balling.
394 hd elbow is NLA but 395 hd elbow is same basic thing just have to drill/clearance holes out to fit larger carb bolts and bolt heads carefully. Not sure if it fits on a 288.

Given Mike isn't really a fan of the 288 he sure builds a mean one doesn't he. Talented guy

I've had Mike do a 7900 and a 385. I also have a 346ne done by him along with some of his chain's. His saws all run amazing and his chain's just plain out cut. He's a pretty damn good guy also.

Had a bizarre failure on the 288 today. The flywheel nut loosened and the flywheel sheared the key. Not knowing what had happened after it stalled, I pulled the recoil rope and there was no resistance. I thought something real bad happened inside the motor. It's up and running again but I can't figure out why the hell it happened.

Should I put some loctite on the nut? Any body ever have this happen?

You should still have the same resistance with or without a flywheel in it.

Not if the key is sheared the the nut is loose enough to allow the flywheel to spin freely on the crankshaft when you pull the starter rope. I haven't had that happen with a saw yet, but I've seen it on other small engines. Sounds like that's what happened in this case.

Yeap you are right about that. I was thinking the crank turning over but if the flywheel ain't tight it wont. Carry on lol

Yep Joe nailed it. Flywheel spinning freely on the crank. Made nice metal on metal scratching sounds. I about crapped my pants initially thinking my Saw had just completely grenaded in some way that killed compression.
