A friend of mine, Brian whom I met at the Arborists Site, is a paint pro who taught me that magnesium spits out dirt and oil when it was baked in an oven for some period. An experiment was done the day before to see how it goes after baking.

(Specimen)
A piece of magnesium plate I got from Stihl 084AV which I previously tinkered. It's got a sandpaper treatment, #240, then #3000 whetstone.

So would it be beneficial to sand, clean, then bake, clean, then paint? How much crud comes out after subsequent baking?

Brian tells me he was successful in painting after he baked them in oven. How much? yet had much evidence to tell how much, will do some more examination when I got time to. Thanks.

Good evening Srcarr52, nice to have a message from you here, your video of welding Solo Twins cover is one of my favorites. Thanks for you tip about this, will keep it in mind when I try TIG.

Nothing about painting things (which is the theme of this thread though), but could you tell me a little more about the filler/fillers you use for mag. You stated in the video that you are using AZ92A filler, are there other fillers besides this. I know mag alloy used for saws varies its structure in alloy compositions, mean they depends on manufactures. So I am assuming if you are using several kinds of fillers for this welding depending on their make.

I should do some more welding videos, people seem to appreciate them.

There are only a few alloys of filler for magnesium. AZ92A is the most recommended for castings, there is AZ101 which is supposed to be more forgiving but I haven't found any before. AZ61A is cheaper and can be used for cast but I think it's more aimed at extrusions. I don't think the alloy of the base alloy matters as much as the amount of contaminates that where allowed in the casting and the porosity which holds other contaminates. Also it's important to knock the surface oxidation off your filler material so you don't introduce it into your weld. I clean the filler with scotch brite the filler and clean with acetone before using it.

Thanks Srcarr, this blue part above is very informative, also did not think of Scotch Brite to be so useful, lol.

I placed inquiries to a couple of filler manufacturers in our local area before noon, one of them gave me a reply, says they have AZ91A and AZ61A in their stock, but no AZ92A, AZ101 for now.
Amazing to me was the price, their offer is nearly 20 bucks for one piece!

I've found the best deals on Amazon or eBay. Blue Demon ERAZ92A.
Thank you for information, had a look at this site. I see the diameter as 1/8'', length 38'', but was not able to find how many filler rod does one package has, five?

It's sold in 1lb packages, density of raw magnesium is 0.063 lb/in^3 so it should be around 34 1/8" rods in the package.

Also found another seller on eBay who sells them for some $41.09.
An anxiety to me is that this manufacturer Blue Demon is an Mexican maker according to Wiki, and some guy leaves a negative feedback on eBay like "extremely poor in quality", though it's for flax....
Could you tell me your experience Srcarr pls.

I haven't used any magnesium filler from Blue Demon before so I can't speak to its quality.
