I need to stop at the farm tonight. It seems to me that we had half of a ladder floating around somewhere.

The first thing I want to try building is some benches for around the firepit. I figured this would be a good first time project because if I screw them up. They'll be by the firepit and if I'm there most of the time I have a little jag going on, so I won't notice it anyway......

What are you sealing the wood with once it's dry?

I have had better luck with this water based stuff than oil based ,the oil base has been flaking off on me ,the water base must flex more or something .

Spar is what the carving guys been using for as long as I can remember.
Something about lessening the affects of UV light.

Has anyone used the mills from Meghi in Brazil? I don't know what the shipping to USA would be but they look like copies of Granberg mills only much cheaper.
Given the cost of shipping to NZ, it's didn't stack up for down here. So I'll be making one instead.
Here's the link (if it upsetting a sponsor, I guess this post can be disappeared by the mods?):

I traded a youth baseball backstop for my Alaskan mill..

I got the waaayyy better end of that stick..

I still cringe thinking of youth baseball tourneys.. Like flashbacks of a darker time..

Here my home made set up from the scrap pile.
Started it years ago as a electric swing saw but wood here has to much silica and was burning up blades so fast it wasn't practical.

You need some welding skills to make this.
Trailer jack is what the saw attaches to and used for hieght adjustments.

I put roll blade wheels under the deck.
You will have to have a way to clip it to the ladder.
I used angle with Teflon

Works sweet as long as it's set up level side to side.
I normally have it going down hill and no pushing required.
The saw cuts with little effort.

You can take ideas from that commercial one they sell also
The deck they have is sweet.
I didn't see this till recently.

Anyone that says a bandsaw beats a chain mill has is wrong.

I set up or break down in 15 min.
Can hump it into the bush with 2 people.

No bands to sharpen or break.

I burn 4-5 liters in a 8 hr shift and mill a ton of lumber
The trailer load is 60% of a 7 hr shift in the jungle.
I went back the next day and loaded the rest.

I have a p100 as well. What chain do I need to get for milling? Or what is it you use?

Any old chain will do from new, mostly. If I'm gonna use a chain a lot, I go to a 5-10 degree top plate angle starting with the first grind. I know milling chains are available but I've never bought any.

I started in on a pile of cedar power poles a buddy found for me.
I didn't get to far when I noticed it getting tough to move the saw along the rail. Thought maybe the chain was getting dull. Turns out the whole frame was out of square and was causing about a 1/8" of run out on each of the 5 cuts I made causing the bar to jam up. Not sure how it got bent out of shape but the M8 needed an afternoon of fiddling around and actually looking at the manual that's been buried for a few years. Round two tomorrow I guess.

(SOUNDS like MAYBE?) your chain is filed with cutters shorter on one side or the other, which will make the bar climb or dive??? Either change to good chain, or refile to equal length cutters? (ANOTHER THAT CAN SNEAK UP ON YOU) is a knot/ bend in the log, closing the distance between log/ beam, and not allowing clearance for saw to pass :)

Pretty soon you won't have any where for water to run off your deck boards!!

The actual length of the cutter has no effect. They do not have to be equal length. Common misunderstanding!
The raker has to be adjusted properly for each tooth. Use a progressive raker gauge and it will cut straight.

Thanks for the ideas, I'm sure that is the case with many milling problems.
I'm running a 3120 that has way more power than I need for the softwoods I have in my area. I grind my chain (404, .058) at 0*, and lower the rakers quite a lot that way I don't have to adjust the grinder for each side. There is a bit of vibration at the start of the cut, but settles down 6-10" into the log.
As far as the knots and bends, that caught me more than once. The problem with the mounting plate on the M8 is that is optimized for a Stihl saw. I redrilled the plate and modded the muffler to move the saw back a bit.
