42 and 42 special jugs and pistons options and differences

Until 1995 Husky used a Gilardoni jug where two bolts are longer then front bolts:
42 jug old.jpg

All in all there was 3 different jugs, the two first one is very close each other, sometime around 92 they started with decomp valve, later the 241 A jug came (1995) and that one has the normal 4 bolts as we are used to.

There is 2 different pistons even their IPL only show one piston through the whole 42 serie. The old piston from Gilardoni is 35 mm tall, the later piston made by KS is 34 mm tall.
42 vs 42 spec piston.jpg

A tad different timings in 241 A jug + longer intake duration due piston, is where Husky found the little extra gain for the 42 special vs 42.

Rumors say there was a closed port 42 special, I've never seen them, but if I should think common sense I think Husky used the old 242 p&c after the 242 XP arrived around late 90/early 91.

Crank cases, G non G and 246 differences.

They used mainly one crankcase until late 1994/ early 1995 (before 246 went into producion), made for 42 mm piston:
crankcase - 1.jpg

Later, who knows when, they opened up the crankcase to make place for the 246 piston(every crankcase before 1995 need to be modded if you plan to knock a 246 p&c on):

Another thing, they went cheap, all cases I've seen from 1994 and older has a crankcase prepared for generator (the one to right is from 1997):

242 piston and cylinder differences.

242 p&c, there are those who claim there was no difference between 242 and 242 XP, well, it's just to take a look and study them....

242 year 89 vs 242 XP year 91 piston

New OEM piston, a tad stronger nowadays

242 XP jug, pay attention to how little bewels the ports has:

Other then Mahle, there was a jug who is a bit more rare, Gilardoni 241 B. I dont have it but know it do exist.

A new update, a bit more super rare jug....

Flywheels:

Non G flywheel (42 special year 97, 42 special year 92, 42 Anniversary year 88) :
flywheels.jpg

The heaviest flywwhel is the one they used from 87-88 (# 501 63 26 01).
The flywheel they used on midd years 88-96 is actually the lightest (# 503 50 53 02).
The last flywheeel they used is a tad heavier then midd years (# 503 73 06 01).

You also need to be aware of 1 of the 2 sorts of clutch drum drive sometimes found on the 42 and 242. Some of the 42/ 242 ( and on some 254 xp saw ) have a drive that only turns the pump when the clutch is engaged ( not constant pumping ) . You will see the same fitment on the 246 and it means finding a near imposable clutch drum to drive the top left worm drive in the picture on Tor's post . You can see the slots for the drive to slot into. There is another sort of plastic worm drive that engages around the shaped needle roller bearing /sprocket stem of the clutch drum ( I think ?) . Pics are the best i can find for now....

The left one is the hard one to find and ones iv found for sale are the ones on the right.

I clean the prefilter at least once a week David.
Dish washer soap and hot water is the way I prefer to clean any airfilters with, but for the prefilter it doesnt mather so much, compresed air will work great there.

honestly I dont know, I bought mine just for the collection.
Magnus from Sweeden praised the 246, it was just as angry in acceleration from midle range and to peak as 242, but more lazy from idle and up to midd range.
I dont doubt in what he said, he has them all.
Out from what he said I would grab one 246 before 42 special.

I will eventually add one of these saws to my collection as I hear good things about them. A peppy lightweight saw seems nice to have for those situations you need one as well.
