At least 10 years ago, my dad was quoted 1200.00 to have ball joints replaced on his '96. 100.00 for the press and a set of Moog joints and we were golden. Using it for u-joints works better than anything else I got too.
Ball joints will do that. Lucky it didn't happen on the road. It gets exciting when the steering doesn't center itself, when you don't expect it.
I would change all 4 as they have a tendency to tighten up.
Crazy stuff happens. I worked on an old Homelite saw that would run perfect....until you set it down. Put it on the ground and it would kill instantly.
I was testing out a power broom by sweeping the granite out of the lawn. Every time I was under a power line, it would kill.

Do they look like they were previously connected? See if it will start without them hooked up.
Usually, if it has a fuel solenoid, it takes over 12 volts to work.
