Do not, I repeat NOT do the whacking trick on the tank if it's still on, you will inevitably cause a seam leak and have more problems than you started with as it is pretty much unrepairable.

My 550 did it to me one 90F day. It does make for a good excuse to cut in more comfortable climes. As far as saw abuse goes that is what circles this right back around to major engine and bearing failures.
